How to Rent a Car on a Budget
Whether you’re traveling for work or are on a vacation, a rental car can be a convenient mode of transportation. Learn some simple tricks that will help you save a lot of money the next time you need to rent a car.
Skip Airports
Renting at the airport is always very expensive. Take a cab or a bus and find a rental agency away from the airport. You’ll find that the rates there are significantly cheaper.
Shop Online
Compare prices and options online to find the best deal. Then head directly to the agency’s site and check if their rates are lower. Book wherever it’s cheapest.
Discount Brands
There are many small, local, dependable brands that also rent cars. They charge a lot less than the major agencies. Do your research and check out their rates.
Memberships
Use your Costco, AAA membership to save money on your next rental car. You could also get discounts with your frequent-flier programs or even from your credit card.
Economy Cars
Reserve the smallest, most affordable car possible. These often get picked up first. So in case one isn’t available, you’re likely to get an upgrade for free.
One Driver
There’s an extra per day charge for every driver you add on to the contract. Some companies waive this charge under certain conditions, but it’s best to stick to one driver.
Own Insurance
Don’t buy the rental agency’s insurance. Check if your personal insurance covers rental cars. Many credit cards also offer secondary insurance to cardholders. Check that too.
No Extras
Don’t go in for satellite radio, GPS, toll transponders, or car seats from the rental agency. Use google maps, pay cash, and carry your own car seat instead. It’ll be significantly cheaper.
No Prepaid Gas
Check fuel prices at nearby gas stations and compare them to the prepaid offer from the agency. Use this information to decide whether it’s cheaper to prepay or just top it off yourself.
Walk or Ride
The best way to save money on a rental car is not to rent a car. Use public transportation or explore the place on foot.
