Shopping for a Hybrid? Here’s a Handy Guide
Hybrids are no longer meant only to deliver maximum fuel efficiency. Today, there’s one for every role. Let’s learn more about them.
Hybrids are cars that combine the power of a conventional combustion engine and a battery. Under certain conditions, hybrids can even drive on electric power alone. Today, there’s an entire range of hybrids available, from fuel-economy maximizing hatchbacks to high-performance hypercars.
Types
Among hybrids, there are regular hybrids that use the gas engine for propulsion and to charge the battery. And there are plug-in hybrids or PHEVs that have a bigger battery, a more powerful electric motor, and additional driving modes. These can feel close to full EVs because they can travel up to 55 miles on electric power alone and often don’t use the gas engine.
Which is Best
In case you have access to a charging port, a PHEV is better because it offers more ways to drive efficiently as long as you can drive on electric power. But, if you’re likely to be using gas engine propulsion, then a non-plug-in hybrid is a far more efficient choice. Another advantage is that hybrids are eligible for the carpool lane sticker in many states. Commutes with hybrids just get smoother.
Body Styles
Today, hybrids are available in almost all body styles. There are hatchbacks like the Prius and BOlt, sedans like the Camry and Accord, and even compact SUVs like the RAV4, CR-V, and Escape. The luxury segment offers more hybrid choices. Lexus, BMW, Volvo, and Acura offer several options.
Tests
If you’re test-driving a hybrid car, make sure that the powertrain doesn’t have a rough transition between EV and hybrid modes. It’s okay if it isn’t seamless, but it shouldn’t be very noticeable. Check how naturally the brake pedal operates. The brake shouldn’t jolt to a stop when it transitions from regenerative braking to mechanical braking. You may even be able to adjust the level of regenerative braking. Ensure that the battery doesn’t take up too much of the cargo space. Check for eco manus and gauges that show you how to maximize fuel economy.
Most importantly, do the math on whether a hybrid can save you money as per your driving patterns.
